Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Yaz Side Effect

Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella are popular oral contraceptive drugs which contain the synthetic hormone drospirenone as the active ingredient. They have been linked to a number of potentially serious side effects since becoming popular, leading many patients to file a Yaz lawsuit in courts across the country. These patients are seeking compensation for their injuries, settlements from drug manufacturers that could help cover medical bills and other costs associated with their injuries. One of the most commonly cited side effects in these Yaz lawsuits is deep vein thrombosis.

What is DVT?

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition characterized by the development of blood clots in deep veins throughout the body. These blood clots occur most frequently in the legs. They can break away from their original location and travel to other areas of the body, causing significant risks–if they get to the heart, this can cause a heart attack; if they get to the brain, it can cause a stroke. Blood clots in the lungs are a cause of pulmonary embolism. Even when they don’t break off and remain in the leg, deep vein thrombosis clots can cause serious and painful leg ulcers and sores.

Although symptoms of deep vein thrombosis can be noted in many patients, about half of people with the condition don’t have any symptoms. The symptoms that might manifest include swelling in the affected leg, ankle, and foot; changes in skin color in the affected area; cramp-like leg pain; and temperature changes in the affected area. Patients who experience any of these symptoms should consult a medical professional right away to avoid a risk of serious complications; the condition may be treated with blood thinners. Blood thinners, too, have a serious risk of side effects.

Why file a Yaz suit?

Many women who have experienced Yaz side effects choose to file a lawsuit against drug maker Bayer. These lawsuits could result in a significant payout that would help cover medical bills, lost wages, and other financial costs associated with dealing with such a serious side effect.
