DePuy Hip Lawsuits Help Affected Patients
Hundreds of patients have experienced complications related to DePuy hip replacement devices since being implanted with the metal-on-metal components, and many of these patients have chosen to take legal action against orthopedics manufacturer DePuy. Patients who have filed these lawsuits are hoping to win a DePuy settlement to help compensate for the injuries they have suffered as a result of their use of the hip replacement devices. Two different, but similar, hip replacement models have been cited in DePuy litigation–the ASR and the Pinnacle hip replacement devices, both of which are metal on metal hip replacement systems that have been linked to a number of side effects such as dislocation and metallosis.
Different hip systems, different lawsuits
The DePuy ASR device was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2005 after it was put through on a “fast track” plan because of its similarities to other devices that were already on the market. DePuy claimed that its product was superior to other implants, ideal for those patients who needed a hip replacement procedure but still wanted to maintain an active lifestyle. However, the Food and Drug Administration received more than 400 complaints in the next three years associated with the use of the hip replacement device, as patients began experiencing complications from DePuy hip implant use, including metal poisoning and hip implant loosening.
The Pinnacle device comes with a similar story. The Pinnacle device comes in a number of varieties, including metals and plastics. The metal on metal version of the Pinnacle hip replacement system is the one that has been causing patients the most problems, as it has been linked to a number of side effects and complications related to its use.
Consolidation of lawsuits in Texas
The United States’ Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation opted to separately consolidate federal Pinnacle and ASR lawsuits. Pinnacle lawsuits have been consolidated in the Northern District of Texas, whereas ASR claims have been set in the Northern District of Ohio.
