Blood Clots and Stroke Cited in Yaz Suits
Yaz and Yasmin have been popular medications since their debut on the pharmaceuticals market, and are manufactured and distributed by drug making giant Bayer Pharmaceuticals. They are different from other oral contraceptives in that they contain the synthetic hormone drospirenone, which some believe is the cause of a number of blood clots and other serious side effects that have been linked to patients’ use of the medication. More than 11,900 lawsuits representing 14,000 women have been filed across the country against Bayer by patients who have experienced side effects associated with the popular birth control pills, including blood clots from Yaz use and other potentially deadly side effects.
Blood clots lead to other complications
Blood clots can form in the legs, arms, eyes, lungs, or brain and sometimes the body can dissolve the clots on its own. However, in most cases that end up being serious, clotting can cause significant pain as well as other serious complications such as pulmonary embolism, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, or stroke. The Food and Drug Administration issued new warnings in April of 2012 about Yasmin and Yaz blood clots, after a panel of 26 experts voted 15 to 11 to keep Yaz and Yasmin on the market in December of 2011. The experts decided that the benefits of the use of Yaz and Yasmin outweighed the risks, but they voted 21 to 5 to add stronger warnings to the label that would highlight the possibility of blood clots caused by the medication. the Food and Drug Administration considered data that noted that 10 out of every 10,000 women taking drospirenone-based contraceptives would experience clotting and complications thereof, whereas women taking other hormone-based contraceptives only have a 6 out of 10 chance of experiencing the same.
Complications can be fatal
Stroke from Yaz is one of several potentially fatal side effects that some patients have experienced, and many of these patients have chosen to join litigation against Bayer in the hopes of receiving compensation for Yaz injuries that they suffered while using the medication.
