New Propecia Sexual Dysfunction Lawsuit Filed
A new Propecia litigation was filed on October 2, 2012 in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York. The plaintiff states that he was unaware of the risks of the medication when he began using it. Through his attorney, the plaintiff alleges that he experienced severe sexual dysfunction as well as cognitive impairment.
He began using Propecia (finasteride) at age 20 in October of 2010 and claims that the symptoms he experienced did not dissipate even after he stopped taking the drug and they persist to date.
This case was filed in the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in New York.
Merck and FDA accused of being too slow to update Propecia information in the U.S.
Similar complaints have spurred lawsuits joining the MDL and throughout the country against Merck, the manufacturer of Propecia. Merck and the FDA have been accused of being too slow to pass the information about the drug’s side effects onto the consumer and medical professionals in the United States.
In 2009, the Swedish Medical Products Agency warned of permanent sexual dysfunction from the drug, but the information accompanying Propecia was not updated in the United States until 2011. This warning was still considered unsatisfactory as it only states that the sexual side effects may persist after cessation of use by the patient.
The frequency of sexual side effects connected to the drug was not noted in the information either—some studies have said it is as high as 39%. Of those individuals, only half reported that the erectile dysfunction subsided when they stopped taking Propecia.
Plaintiff claims depression along with sexual problems from Propecia
The plaintiff claims that his erectile problems began shortly after he began taking Propecia. He complains that his quality of life has been diminished and that he has suffered pain and suffering. In addition to the erectile dysfunction, he has needed to be treated for other side effects such as depression and emotional distress.
He demands compensation for his pain and suffering and economic loss and requests compensatory, punitive, special, general, and exemplary damages. He seeks damages in an amount that will be determined at trial.
