Vaginal Mesh Complications Focus of Lawsuits
Many patients who have experienced some of the serious side effects related to controversial vaginal mesh devices have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of these devices in the hopes of winning compensation for their injuries. Vaginal mesh devices are approved by the Food and Drug Administraiton as a means of treating conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, but many women have reported complications related to the devices that they deem excessive.
Vaginal mesh complications can be painful
As of 2011, the Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety warning about the potential side effects related to vaginal mesh devices, stating that these side effects are “not rare” and advising that patients should be aware of these risks before they undergo vaginal mesh surgery. Although some products have been pulled from the market by the device manufacturers, there has not been any kind of surgical mesh recall at this point that would take into account multiple brands and devices.
There are a variety of vaginal mesh side effects that have been reported by the general public. These include contraction or shrinkage of the mesh, perforation of the bladder or bowel during surgery, recurring infection around the area in which the mesh was implanted, abdominal pain which can radiate to the leg, pelvis, or vagina, urinary incontinence or other urinary problems, and mesh erosion which is also known as extrusion or protrusion.
The most common complication is vaginal mesh extrusion, which occurs when the rough edges of the mesh work their way through the walls of the vagina. This can cause a number of serious complications, including infection, perforation of an organ, bleeding, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Patients file suit against manufacturers
Many patients who have suffered serious vaginal mesh complications have decided to file suit against the device manufacturers responsible for the distribution of their particular vaginal mesh device. Many of these patients have enlisted the help of a vaginal mesh lawyer, who can answer any legal questions they may have before they file suit. These plaintiffs are seeking monetary compensation for their injuries and medical costs.
